Senior Electrical Engineer | MicaSense

Job Summary:

The Senior Electrical Engineer is an integral part of the MicaSense product development team, responsible for designing electronic systems, sub-systems, and PCBAs for our current and future sensor systems. The ideal candidate will have a passion for problem solving, working well in a team environment, and can be agile in their knowledge and execution of all aspects of PCB design and production.


The MicaSense Engineering team develops next-generation technologies that enable farmers, scientists, and environmental engineers to utilize drone systems to monitor agriculture, vegetation, protected ecosystems, and sensitive ecological sites. As a key member of the team, the Senior EE will design, develop, and validate electronics architectures and hardware for next generation imaging systems.

Key Job Responsibilities:

  • Engage in all phases of new product introduction, including concept, architecture documentation, design, prototype, testing, supplier interfaces, manufacturing introduction and service support
  • Create and document system level architectures and perform schematic capture, PCB layout, EMI/EMC design and mitigation strategies, and electronic component selection
  • Troubleshoot and evaluate new PCBAs, resolve issues with existing designs
  • Assist and mentor other engineers in troubleshooting tasks and design decisions
  • Design and implement software tools to facilitate automated production and test of hardware products
  • Supervise staff and contractors, working across functional teams across the company

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A passion for problem solving and understanding how things work
  • Motivated to take ownership of a project and see it through with minimal oversight
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related technical field, or equivalent experience
  • 7 years of applicable engineering experience
  • Ability to work within a cross-functional team
  • Demonstrated experience designing, prototyping, and validating complex SoC PCBAs using modern HDI technologies such as blind/buried vias, microvias, and complex layer stackups
  • Understanding of signal integrity management practices for high-speed digital designs
  • First-hand experience with Altium Designer for schematic capture and PCB layout
  • Experience with a scripting language such as Matlab or Python
  • Comfortable working hands-on with hardware and using electronic test equipment (multi-meter, oscilloscope, power supply, soldering)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or related technical field
  • First-hand knowledge designing and testing imaging systems using CMOS image sensors
  • Working knowledge of mechanical and thermal aspects of electrical sub-system design and packaging
  • Familiar with documentation and version control methods for managing large projects
  • FPGA design experience (Verilog or VHDL)
  • Experience in detailed mixed-signal electrical design involving microcontrollers, analog signal conditioning, sensor acquisition, and power management
  • Comfortable with C and C++ on embedded systems
  • Experience with digital photography and image processing pipelines
  • Experience with regulatory standards or design in a regulated environment (Medical, MIL-STD, FAA) which requires fulfilling quality systems regulations in the design and development lifecycle
  • Experience designing testing systems to validate production PCBAs and electronic products
  • Strong technical leadership skills and commitment to delivering high quality products
